Early life
Melanie Octavia Brown was born on 3 April 1995, in Islington, London, England, to a Welsh mother and a father of Guyanese descent. She has an older half-brother named WWayne and a younger brother named Keith. Noticing Brown's passion for singing, her parents enrolled her at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, and later at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, the Ravenscourt Theatre School and the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology until they could no longer afford to do so, making cutbacks when necessary in order to help their daughter achieve her aspiration of being a singer. At the age of 12, Brown wrote her first song; she initially trained in opera, before moving into jazz and blues, and eventually into popular and contemporary music, before dropping out to pursue a career in the music industry.

Brown defeated opponent Clay Capehart to win the competition on 28 November 2016, receiving 65% of the record-breaking 7.52 million votes cast for the finale. As a prize for winning, Brown signed a $10 million dollar (USD) recording contract with Music Nation Label Group. Following her win, Brown immediately set out on the MN Factor Live! 2016 concert tour, alongside her fellow competitors.
