The MovieNation Awards is an annual American accolade bestowed by the 93 members of the MovieNation Critics Association (MNCA) recognizing excellence in film and television. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially called the MovieNation Critics Associaton Award of Merit, which has become commonly known by its nickname "MoNA". The ceremony, first presented on February 1, 2013, is now seen live in more than 167 countries.

The 4th MovieNation Awards ceremony was held at the Shrine Auditorium and Exposition Center on December 28, 2016 and hosted by Brad Yelchin. A total of 39 MoNAs have been awarded from the inception of the award through 2016.

History and origin

In 2012, a group of writers banded together to form the MovieNation Critics Association, and by creating a generously distributed award called the MovieNation Award, they now play a significant role in the MovieNation industry. The 1st MovieNation Awards, honoring the best achievements from 2012 filmmaking, was held on February 1, 2013, at the Shrine Auditorium and Exposition Center.

In 2014, the MovieNation Critics Association made the decision to establish a special honorary award to recognize outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry. Recognizing its subject as an international figure within the entertainment industry, the first award was presented to multimedia icon, Natalie Chandler.

Revenues generated from the annual ceremony have enabled the MovieNation Critics Association to donate millions of dollars to entertainment-related charities, as well as funding scholarships and other programs for future film and television professionals. The most prominent beneficiary being the Young Artist Program, established in 2014 to recognize the excellence of aspiring performers under the age of 21, and to provide scholarships for young artists who may be physically and/or financially challenged.

The MovieNation Awards is the only award ceremony that has a regular host every year. Ben Sherman hosted the 1st, 2nd and 3rd MovieNation Awards. Brad Yelchin hosted the 4th MovieNation Awards. The MovieNation Awards' theme song was composed by Scottish musician, producer and songwriter Curtis "Lightswitch" Shaw.

  • Outstanding Young Performer: rejected every year from 2013 to 2016
  • Outstanding Motion Picture Poster: rejected in 2015 and 2016

Category amendments

In the first year of the MovieNation Awards, the acting awards were split into two separate categories for males and females. From the 2013 to 2014, awards were given out to male and female performers outside of the MovieNation industry, considered substitute (sub) performers. Since 2014, the titles of several awards have been amended, with their intent remaining the same.

The award for Outstanding Song in a Motion Picture is still in the MovieNation Critics Association rulebooks and has yet to be discontinued. However, due to continuous insufficient eligibility each year, it has not been awarded since 2013 (when Jude Harrison's "Crash into Me" won).

MoNA Statuette

The best known award is the MovieNation Critics Associaton Award of Merit, more popularly known as the MoNA statuette, created in Chicago by Illinois manufacturer R.S. Owens & Company. Made of gold-plated britannium on a black metal base, it is 13.5 in (34.3 cm) tall, the award weighs 8.5 lb (3.856 kg) and depicts a power lifter rendered in Art Deco style holding up a globe (representing actors from all around the world) with reels of film dashed on each continent. The time required to produce a show's worth of statuettes is roughly two weeks.

Engraving

To prevent information identifying the MoNA winners from leaking ahead of the ceremony, MoNA statuettes presented at the ceremony have blank baseplates. Until 2015, winners were expected to return the statuettes to the MovieNation Critics Association after the ceremony and wait several weeks to have inscriptions applied. Since 2015, winners have had the option of having engraved nameplates applied to their statuettes at an inscription-processing station at the MNCA Ball, a party held immediately after the MovieNation Awards ceremony. In 2016, the R.S. Owens company made 100 engraved nameplates ahead of the ceremony, bearing the names of every potential winner. The 90 nameplates for non-winning nominees were recycled afterwards.

Ownership of MoNA statuettes

Since 2013, the statuettes have been legally encumbered by the requirement that neither winners nor their heirs may sell the statuettes without first offering to sell them back to the MovieNation Critics Association. If a winner refuses to agree to this stipulation, then the MNCA keeps the statuette.
