The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego, California on September 24, 2023. The show was hosted by Hannah Seymour, her second time hosting; she previously hosted the 2020 ceremony.

It honored the best music videos, artists, and songs released between July 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023. This year saw the introduction of a new category, Best Tour. Like the previous year, categories Best Social Message in a Video, Coca Cola Fans' Choice Award and Song of the Summer, were awarded through the fan votes. Camila López was the most awarded artist, winning four trophies out of five nominations for her video "Differently", followed by Leland Myles with three trophies; the latter was also the most nominated artist with eight nominations.

And while not handed out this year, Seymour announced that the Video Vanguard Award will be renamed the Chris Kane Video Vanguard Award in honor of Chris Kane's life and contributions to the cultural landscape of music videos.
