The third season of the American television drama series Loose Ends premiered on September 24, 2015, on FX, and concluded on February 11, 2016. Months prior to its premiere, FX announced the show would be upgrading from 10 to 13 episodes and aired in the Thursday 10:00 pm time slot, the same as the previous season. The series was created by Natalie Chandler, who served as executive producer alongside Mark Calhoun. Its main character is Eddie Chance, a hard-edged vigilante, who exacts revenge on those who cross him. While preferring to stay an outsider, troublesome situations lead him to several points of no return. The series is set in the fictional city of Kelso, Rhode Island. The season was produced by FX Productions, Blue Calhoun Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, in association with Nattiewood, Inc.
In its third season, the series received numerous accolades. The cast was awarded Outstanding Performance by a Cast in Television at the MovieNation Awards. For his performance, Joseph Noelle won the MovieNation Award for Outstanding Supporting or Guest Performance in Television. Bentley DeLuca and Gabriel Young also received some recognition, earning MovieNation Award nominations for their portrayals of Eddie Chance and Paul Knox, respectively.
Plot
Even with his most challenging nemesis presumed dead, Eddie clings on to the secret that a bleeding Paul whispered in his ear and how it changes everything he's ever known about his dysfunctional life. Ignoring his best friend Fitz and his estranged brother Barry, Eddie holes himself up in an abandoned underground shelter, which is not quite what it appears to be. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Eddie and Barry have a maternal half brother and sister, twins Jason (Sam Berton) and Riley Webber (Isabel Lucas), who become deranged after learning of Carol's murder. By the aid of their father, Frank (Kenny Johnson), they seek to avenge their mother's death by infiltrating the lives of their older siblings, both of whom they hold responsible for the tragic loss.

Production
Development
The series was renewed for a third season on October 6, 2014, just two episodes into season two, making it the fastest series renewal in FX history. It was also announced that the third season would upgrade from 10 to 13 episodes. Production on the third season began in May 2015. The table read for the premiere happened on May 11, 2015, with filming starting four days later. Along with other FX dramas, this season was split into two runs of uninterrupted episodes, the first consisting of eight episodes commencing on September 24, 2015. The second run, consisting of five uninterrupted episodes, commencing on January 14, 2016.
Filming
On-location filming usually takes place in locations within Vancouver, British Columbia, including Buntzen Lake, Cleveland Dam, Heritage Park, The Bridge Studios, Sutherland Secondary School and Vancouver City Hall. Because most episodes take place in rural Rhode Island, filming often takes place at an old military base. Having been shut down for years, the buildings have been removed, leaving just roads on which sets are erected, such as for crossroads scenes. Other locations used on the show are often reused two or three times, with the art department making variations to conceal this.
Casting
On August 11, 2015, it was announced that Sam Berton and Isabel Lucas would recur in the third season as twins Jason and Riley, the maternal half siblings of Eddie and Barry Chance. Kenny Johnson was cast as the twins' father Frank, a troubled military veteran with severe PTSD. Following Paul Knox's wounded state in the season two finale, it remained to be seen whether or not Gabriel Young would have an active role in season three. The network confirmed Young's return as Paul in September 2015, with a "dead or alive" campaign that teased the character's ultimate fate.
Reception
Critical reception
The third season received positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes gave the third season a rating of 90% based on 48 reviews with an average score of 7.9 out of 10. Metacritic scored the show an 80 out of 100 based on 35 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". TV Guide critic Matt Roush praised the show, particularly the acting of DeLuca, stating: "The show is grounded in DeLuca's high-impact performance, the work of a confident and strong leading man who's always good company." Chicago Tribune critic Maureen Ryan also praised the series, writing: "The shaggily delightful dialogue, the deft pacing, the authentic sense of place, the rock-solid supporting cast and the feeling that you are in the hands of writers, actors and directors who really know what they're doing — all of these are worthy reasons to watch Loose Ends." Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times did not approve of its portrayal of Frank Webber, expressing concern for how viewers are expected to equate PTSD with the crime and violence used to advance the story in Loose Ends and other like-minded shows. The Orlando Sentinel questioned its survivability: "Credibility starts to fray when our heroes, or anti-heroes, keep needing miraculous last-second evasions and escapes."

The third season averaged 4.92 million viewers and a 1.87 rating in the 18–49 demographic.
